How to choose the right sealant
Sealant selection comes down to the substrate, how much the joint moves, the exposure, and whether it needs to be painted.
Sealing and bonding in one. An SMX hybrid polymer sealant adhesive seals and bonds across mixed substrates, is paintable, and stays elastic, suited to construction joints, trims, and mixed-material work.
Movement and construction joints. A SMX hybrid polymer and polyurethane sealant gives a strong, flexible seal on expansion and construction joints that need higher movement accommodation.
Paintable interior gaps. An acrylic sealant suits low-movement interior gaps around trim and cornice that will be painted over.
Wet areas and glazing. For bathrooms, roofing, and glazing, a silicone from the Silicones range is generally the correct choice rather than a hybrid or acrylic.

Application guidance
Clean and dry the joint before application, removing dust, grease, and old sealant residue. Mask either side of the joint for a straight finish and remove the tape before the sealant skins. Tool the bead within the open time on the technical datasheet, and leave the joint undisturbed until it has cured. For deep joints, fit backing rod to control bead depth and prevent three-sided adhesion, which restricts the sealant’s ability to move. Prime difficult substrates where the datasheet requires it. What's the difference between a sealant and a sealant adhesive?
A sealant seals a joint against water and air while allowing it to move. A sealant adhesive, such as an SMX hybrid, also provides enough bond strength to hold materials together, so it seals and bonds in one product.
Can Soudal sealant be used outdoors?
Yes. Many hybrid and polyurethane sealants are rated for exterior use with weather and UV resistance. Confirm the specific product’s exposure rating on its technical datasheet.
Which sealant is paintable?
SMX hybrid and acrylic sealants accept paint once cured. Standard silicones do not. If a joint needs painting, choose a hybrid or acrylic rather than a silicone.
